POLICE MAKES PROGRESS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM:

The Sokoto State Police Command today, 8th August, 2012 averted what would have been another major disaster in the ancient Caliphate city of Sokoto, when at about 11.00am, an unknown person riding an unregistered motor cycle, discretely dropped a black polythene bag at the Secretariat of one of Nigeria?s leading political parties. Information about the presence of this strange object was promptly relayed to the Police Authority in the state by a patriotic and civic-minded citizen. The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 10- AIG Muktari Ibrahim and the Commissioner of Police in charge of the state immediately deployed a combined team of police men from the Bomb Disposal Unit to the area. The quick response of the police operatives saved the day. The polythene bag was located, scientifically examined and found to be containing high calibre Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). Personnel of the Police Bomb Disposal Unit thereafter carried out a controlled detonation of the explosives. No body was harmed and there was no casualty of any kind. The vicinity of the Party?s Secretariat was meticulously combed, to be sure of its safety and those of members of the public. In a related development, the Kogi State Police Command personnel today, 8th August, 2012, made a major break-through in their effort to bring to book, the perpetrators of the heinous crime that left two soldiers and several worshippers in Deeper Life Church, dead in Okene. On sighting the Policemen, the hoodlums opened fire on them, prompting a gun duel. In the ensuing battle, the gang leader identified as Yekini Isah of Obehira area of Okene sustained injury on his head. Though he initially escaped from the scene, he was trailed and arrested in a hide-out at Ibilo in Edo State, where was receiving native treatment for his gun wounds. Two other suspects, including a female, were arrested during the operation. One AK 47 rifle with 30 rounds of live ammunition was also recovered from the criminals. The Inspector General of Police ? IGP MD Abubakar while commending the Police operatives from the two Commands for their professionalism, courage and gallantry, thanked Nigerians for their cooperation, partnership and enduring faith in the Nigeria Police. Our Reformation Agenda

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar since assumption of office, has been working tirelessly to reposition the Nigerian Police and to restore public confidence in the Force. He has advocated a N50, 000 minimum wage for a constable in the Force force, saying such will go a long way to boost morale and promote efficiency. The IG said he had already made p...roposal to the Federal Government and making a “serious representation” for the actualisation of the new salary structure for the police. He said apart from salary, other welfare packages like housing, training, mortgage policy and efficient cooperative society are being restructured to ensure that every policeman benefits from the scheme. 'We have started with the 500 housing unit in Abuja.' He warned his men to henceforth stop any form of harassment of journalists and other innocent Nigerians, saying if reports were made, appropriate action will be taken against erring officer. He, however, urged them to protect their stations and other public buildings. The IGP further stressed that, “The era of attacking police station or government building is over.” He said 16,000 policemen out of the 50,000 will go for Intelligence Training, while 10,000 will go for Detective Training. He added that the newly promoted Assistant Inspector Generals of Police underwent a two week management course in Lagos. He ordered for 300 patrol vehicles to be deployed in all the major roads in the country for effective policing and safety of the people on highways.
